Description
The ISO 14001:2015 standard is a voluntary international standard that aims to implement an Environmental Management System within businesses and organizations of all sizes, and in all sectors of activity.
It is part of the international standards framework or ISO 14000 family (ISO 14000, ISO 14001, and ISO 14004...) which all concern environmental management. They are developed by the technical committee ISO/TC 207.
The ISO 14001 standard defines precise requirements for an Environmental Management System (EMS) allowing an organization to:
Determine its significant environmental impacts
Develop an environmental policy
Establish objectives
Take regulatory requirements into account
Establish processes enabling it to comply with the commitments expressed in this environmental policy
Undertake the necessary actions to increase its environmental performance
It fully integrates into the EMAS (“Eco Management and Audit Scheme"), created in 1993 by the European Union to frame voluntary eco-management approaches using an Environmental Management System (EMS).
The current version of the ISO 14001 standard is that of 2015. This standard was published in September 2015 and replaces the ISO 14001:2004 standard. It has been amended with ISO 14001:2015/Amd 1:2024 concerning climate-related actions.
It has a scope of action affecting both the certified organization (or candidate for certification) and interested parties (clients, partners, lobbies...). More than 500,000 ISO 14001 certifications have been issued in 180 countries.
