Maisons du Monde: the French furniture giant is ISO 50001 certified

Top News07/06/2023

Today, all 227 Maisons du Monde shops in France are ISO 50001 certified by Apave Certification.

The aim for the retailer? To reduce its carbon footprint.

As part of this virtuous approach, the French furniture and decoration retailer has turned to Apave Certification from 2021 for ISO 50001 certification of all its shops in France.

The Quality Safety Environment (QSE) Project Manager at Maisons du Monde, Margaux Plantive-Triger, shares her experience of ISO 50001 energy management system certification by Apave Certification.

Why has Maisons du Monde

chosen ISO 50001 certification ?

‘The search for savings was not our primary objective. When we embarked on the process to obtain ISO 50001 certification, we wanted to go beyond the regulatory energy audits, because we expected more added value,’ she continues.

Thanks to this certification, Apave is helping Maisons du Monde to achieve two key strategic objectives:

  • Reducing energy consumption (by 45% between 2016 and 2024)
  • Purchasing green energy, where possible with a guarantee of local (national) origin.

Why choose certification

by Apave Certification?

One of the five pillars of Maisons du Monde's CSR movement is the transformation of its internal practices to reduce its environmental footprint. By 2025, Maisons du Monde is committed to reducing its carbon intensity by 25%.

For Margaux Plantive-Triger, Apave Certification's support enabled them to benefit from ‘the expertise and practical advice of a third party. Our Apave contacts were very attentive, available and responsive, and were very supportive, providing us with examples of documents to help us formalise our procedures’.

The next step for this rapidly expanding international group will be to certify Maisons du Monde shops in other countries.

ISO 50001, a voluntary international number, enables companies to set up systems to improve their energy performance. It enables them to demonstrate compliance with the energy efficiency policy they have set themselves.

According to Margaux Plantive-Triger, ‘it is vital to be structured in terms of data’, so as to have solid data on past energy consumption and thus form a real database. This certification, issued by Apave Certification, ‘has enabled us to better formalise our processes and protocols’. With the aim of limiting energy consumption, Apave Certification supported its client right to the end. ‘Preparing for the audits with the shops helped us to identify good practices’.

For example, reducing lighting periods and the intensity of lights during the day.

The approach that has been put in place has involved the shop teams, who naturally have a role to play on a daily basis, particularly the CSR referents. It has also made it possible to question practices that had become ingrained in our habits. ‘I'm also proud of the teams who have worked together on this joint continuous improvement project,’ adds Ms Plantive.

What is the ISO 50001

energy management system?

ISO 50 001 - Energy Management System - defines specific requirements for an energy management system (EMS), enabling an organisation to:

  • Develop and implement a more efficient energy policy
  • Establish objectives, targets and action plans enabling it to meet the commitments expressed in this policy
  • Measure the results of this energy policy based on data
  • Take the necessary steps to continuously improve its energy performance

Energy saving, energy management and energy performance are now essential objectives in management systems. This improves quality management. Apave Certification carries out audits with the aim of awarding ISO 50001 certification, but also supports players of all sizes in their improvement initiatives, with numerous benefits for their brand image.

This certification service is carried out under COFRAC accreditation (in accordance with ISO 17021-1) for the certification of management systems.
